FRA, FLA Meet Congressional Aides at Xmas Tree Farm

FRA staff and members joined Forest Landowners Association staff and members at a Maryland Christmas Tree Farm December 6 and 7 to meet with staff members of key congressional offices, to present them with vouchers to cut their own Christmas trees, and to chat about the issues. “Make A Cut On Us,” now in its fourth annual iteration, drew 57 congressional aides to the Maryland countryside—in spite of or because of the heavy snowfall, which created quite a scenic vista out in the plantation. FRA members Ann Duff, Mike Branch, and Tom Bosley; FRA staffers Richard Lewis, Steve Jarvis, and Neil Ward; and a fine assemblage of FLA members and staff served up hot cider in paper cups (another renewable resource) while serving up key points on this year’s theme, “Taxes Impact Future Forests.”

Since each of the key issues we focused on is ripe for action in 2004—defeating the mobile machinery excise tax proposal, revising capital gains treatment of lump sum timber sales, and repealing the federal death tax—the contacts were timely. The event, now in its fourth annual iteration, again proved an effective networking opportunity for building long-term relationships with taxwriting and natural resource committee staff.
