Energy Bill Pushes Biomass Power

The Energy Bill that the U.S. House of Representatives passed in early August, including the controversial provision to drill for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, also included a provision extending and expanding a renewable energy tax credit, available to generating facilities placed in service before 2007. The credit is expected to encourage demand for wood biomass as an electricity generation fuel source. The Bill also expands Department of Energy research and development programs focused on biomass energy technology to include work on gasification and other forest-related bioenergy projects, in addition to production incentive payments for biomass generating. The bill awaits attention in the Senate.
