California: "No Cut" Referendum? On July 24, the text of a ballot referendum was submitted to the California Attorney General, to be assigned a title and official summary, which proposes to ban the cutting of any tree, on private or state land, which germinated before the year 1850. The year 1850 seems to have been chosen for mythical resonance, rather than for biological relevance: that's the year California became a state. The sponsoring "Citizens Campaign for Old Growth Preservation" claims the endorsements of well-known treesitter Julia "Butterfly" Hill, singer Bonnie Raitt, and actor Woody Harrelson. The Attorney General has until early September to publish the title and summary, at which point the sponsors may start collecting signatures to qualify the measure for the 2002 ballot.
