Interior Approps Calls for Expedited Fuel Removal

With the 106th Congress in its final weeks, on September 21, a House-Senate conference committee included $240 million in the Interior Appropriations bill for the coming fiscal year dedicated to "fuel reduction treatments" on public lands deemed to be threatened by wildfire. The measure, backed by the influential Senator Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico) calls for "expedited procedures" to authorize fuel reduction, including salvage harvest, through a corresponding mandate to federal land managers. It does not stipulate harvest volumes or call for abbreviated administrative or legal review of harvest projects-merely stating that these projects should receive Endangered Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act review without delay, ahead of other projects' reviews.
