USFS SALE MANAGEMENT FUNDING CUT BEATEN BACK

Referring to the 2000 fire season's disastrous beginning, a June 15 American Forest and Paper Association memo notes: "These messages and warnings of catastrophic events aren't what any would wish for on our nation's public lands, but they are effective and have gotten a receptive response in Congress." Most specifically, among these responses, was the defeat, by a substantial bipartisan majority, of the Wu/Smith amendment to the 2001 Interior Appropriations bill, which would have reduced the Forest Service's timber sale management line item by $14.7 million. This defeat came in spite of heavy lobbying by the League of Conservation Voters and appears to acknowledge a new awareness in congress of the role timber management plays in improving forest health. In fact, the National Association of Homebuilders, in their action call opposing the amendment, gave more space to the forest health side of the question than to their bread-and-butter concern, availability of lumber.
