BOISE REGIONAL OFFICE BURNS

On December 25, an arson incident hit Boise Cascade Corporation's administrative offices in Monmouth, Oregon; none of the 25 employees who work there was injured, but the entire 8,000-square-foot facility was destroyed. Several days later, a statement claiming to speak for the "Earth Liberation Front"-associated in the past with various eco-terrorist incidents, usually involving animal rights or genetic engineering positions-claimed ELF responsibility for the incident, citing it as "a lesson to all greedy multinational corporations who don't respect ecosystems," and chiding Boise for "ravaging the forests of the Pacific Northwest" and alleging that Boise "now looks toward the virgin forests of Chile." The statement provided enough details of the incident to make the claim of responsibility credible, so the investigation passed from the Oregon State Police to the FBI.

With respect to Boise's joint oriented strand board venture with Chilean partner Maderas Condor, the company says logging for the plant will be done on private "nonindustrial native wood lots that have been harvested for many years" and that harvest levels can be "sustained indefinitely."
