FSC Attacked from the Left On November 20, the London-based Rainforest Foundation UK released a report alleging that the green movement's favored forest certification organization, the Forest Stewardship Council, has failed to eliminate conflicts of interests affecting its certification auditors' objectivity, noting "vested corporate interest in ensuring successful outcomes to certification assessments." The report, Trading in Credibility: The Myth and Reality of the Forest Stewardship Council, also censures the organization's "fast-growth strategy" which, RF determines, has "promoted certification of non-compliant forest managers, undermined multi-stakeholder processes, and disregarded the policy context in targeted countries." RF also finds problems with FSC's chain-of-custody system, deeming it difficult to verify independently. FSC's spokeswoman claimed to welcome the critique but stated that RF's information was outdated or mistaken or that the inconsistencies noted were already being dealt with. The report is available on line at www.rainforestfoundationuk.org/FSC/FSCReport.html.
