CERTIFICATION NOTES

In late November, three companies reported significant developments in their programs to certify the sustainability of their forest practices. On November 23, Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc. announced successful completion of an independent third-party audit of its 3.3 million acres in the company's four regions nationwide. Auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers verified compliance with the 12 objectives of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(sm) objectives, reviewing timber harvest practices, road construction, reforestation, streamside management, and many other activities.

Also on November 23, International Paper Company announced that it had reached an agreement with London-based consultant Bureau Veritas Quality International to provide an independent verification of whether its forest management practices are sound. BVQI will evaluate IP's management of all 7.5 million acres of its U.S. forest land with reference to the SFI standard, and will provide a report by mid-2000.

On November 29, TimberWest Forest Corporation received formal notification that it has completed full registration of its Environmental Management System under the internationally recognized ISO 14001 standard, following an independent audit by KPMG Quality Registrar Inc. The verification covers everything from forest operations, sorting logs, and manufacturing lumber to the shipping of the final product, including the audit of all six of TimberWest's forest operations.
