Forest Management

A May 27 article in the Duluth [Minnesota] Star Tribune reports the story we've been waiting to hear: a conservation organization engaging a forest products company to manage and protect "ecologically significant land" it has acquired. The players are The Nature Conservancy, which purchased 7,500 acres of forest and wetland at the headwaters of the St. Louis River in northeastern Minnesota last year, and UPM Kymmene's Blandin Paper Company. "The conservation organization . . . is so impressed by the way Blandin has managed its own tree lands lately that it's paying the paper company $50,000 for advice on what to do with what the Conservancy calls 'one of Minnesota's last great places,'" submits reporter Larry Oakes. Blandin is detailing its forest ecologist, Cheryl Adams, to spend one fifth of her time over the next two years fulfilling the contract.

We infer from the general drift of the article that NC intends to extract enough forest products from its forest to pay the expenses of holding and managing it.
