"Forest Sustainability" Primer The Forest History Society has produced a useful booklet, Forest Sustainability: The History, the Challenge, the Promise, which, at 83 pages, is as concise a summary of the historical context and definitions surrounding this much-disputed term as we are likely to get. The text, by Professor Donald Floyd of the State University of New York-Syracuse's College of Environmental Science and Forestry, is a judicious attempt to blend industry and green frames of reference in a 10,000-year retrospective. Dr. Floyd summarizes varying interpretations of the historical record, and if different interests inevitably dispute his value judgments, anyone with an interest in history -- to say nothing of forest history -- will find his presentation engaging and probably useful in furthering the current dialogue on how we view and use forests and what constitutes a successful interaction with them. Single copies are available from Forest History Society, Inc., 701 William Vickers Avenue, Durham, NC 27701 @ $7.95 plus $3 shipping. Orders of 10 or more copies are available @ $5.00 per copy, plus an undetermined shipping charge. Please contact FHS President Steven Anderson at 919/682-9319 or stevena@duke.edu.
