Selling Timberland on eBay

In January's National Woodlands magazine, Oregon landowner David Sullivan sets forth his experience auctioning off an 80-acre plot of timberland by means of the well-known on-line auction service, eBay. He chose eBay over the on-line services dedicated to timber transactions chiefly because of its low, flat fee, its broad base of potential bidders, and its "well-oiled" process for evaluating bidders' creditworthiness. Mr. Sullivan writes that he posted a map, a detailed description, and other conditions of sale as explicitly as he could and used a bulk mailing bureau to notify a list of potential bidders of the sale.

His experience, in an open-bid format, was altogether favorable. The broad base of bidders brought the auction to the attention of a bidder who had special reasons to close on the sale ("industrial firms dropped out in the mid-30s") and who eventually bought the property for $48,700-more than twice the minimum bid and well in excess of the highest estimate Mr. Sullivan had obtained from his appraisers.
