Southern Wetland Forests The U.S. Forest Service's Southern Research Station has published a survey and analysis of Wetland Forest Statistics for the South Atlantic States (Resource Bulletin SRS-62), reporting that 17.6 million acres of wetland timberland comprised 21% of all timberland in the South Atlantic region, almost all in the Coastal Plain. Researchers report surprise at finding pine stands accounting for 25% of the region's wetland forest. The authors emphasize the significant role the wetland timber resource plays in the Coastal Plain's timber economy, not only being a dominant land type but also above average in productivity.
