SAF Confronts "Let Burn" Option

We've expressed our gratification to the Society of American Foresters for the "Wildfire Myths and Truths" news release, signed by Executive Vice-President Bill Banzhaf, which went out through major media channels on September 9 and is still showing up. Supporting the views of the Forest Service's deputy chief for research, Robert Lewis, whom he quotes, Mr. Banzhaf refutes the "no management" option for dealing with fuel loading on public forests and makes a persuasive case for active management-"thinning trees in conjunction with subsequent prescribed burning"-as the best fire control option. He concludes with a forceful political assessment: "The solutions to the wildfire problems are known, but obstructionists are using myths to block attempts to implement them. The public deserves better." To review the release, please click here.
