SFI / FSC Comparison Released On October 16, 2001, the much-anticipated Meridian Institute comparison of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® and the Forest Stewardship Council-US's respective forest certification systems appeared. This study, jointly commissioned by the FSC-US, the American Forest & Paper Association, and The Home Depot, is the work of a panel of 10 forestry experts, selected by consensus of both certification organizations. It analyses the differences and similarities of the two programs, both in terms of structure and sustainability criteria, and directs itself to purchasers of forest products interested in an objective view of what respective certifications guarantee or promote.
