Maine: Forest Management Numbers

On September 12, the Maine Forest Service released its 2000 Silviculture Activities Report, summarizing the current status of management activities in Maine's forests. Among the findings:

  • Maine landowners harvested 563,500 acres on 6,200 individual operations in 2000.

  • 35% of those acres were harvested by a shelterwood method.

  • Clearcutting accounted for 2.5% (13,815 acres) of the total harvest, with an average clearcut size of 21 acres.

  • 75% of all harvest acres had licensed professional foresters involved (a 15% increase from 1999).

  • Herbicide use has declined by 20% since 1996, with 25,000 acres treated in 2000.

On September 8, the Maine Forest Service released an inventory report confirming a previous finding that Maine's forests contain more wood than they did five years ago. In 2000, it reported, Maine forests held an estimated inventory of 281 million cords of wood of pulpwood quality or better, compared with 250 million cords in 1995.
