Field & Stream on Grouse Habitat An article by Jack Kulpa on ruffed grouse hunting in the September Field & Stream, "Ruffed & Reliable," leads right off praising forest management: "Twenty years ago the top-producing grouse states-Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan-aggressively harvested aspen. Quarter-sections were clear-cut on a rotating basis on national forest lands, producing aspen stands in various stages of rejuvenation. This was prime habitat for ruffed grouse. Since then, public prejudice against logging has all but halted clear-cutting, and aspen stands in national forests are in decline. As a result, grouse populations are dwindling on federal lands throughout the Great Lakes region and the eastern United States. Some studies suggest that this may also be the reason behind our vanishing woodcock. Fortunately," Kulpa notes, "aspen continues to be clear-cut in commercial forests." Thus, in bits and pieces, the story of forest management makes its way through the popular press. Back to "News" Forest Resources Association
