CU Looks at Forest Certification

The consumer advocate organization Consumers Union has posted evaluations of the Sustainable Forestry InitiativeSM and the Forest Stewardship Council at www.eco-labels.org (to view these evaluations, enter the name of the respective program in the "Certifying Program" box). CU finds both programs have limitations as far as being even-handed guarantees to the consumer. CU finds the presence of logging and other commercial interests on the SFI board disconcerting and indicative of a greater conflict of interest than sponsors acknowledge; and, in the case of SFI's third-party certification program, CU thinks verification indicators are too vague or qualitative.

CU also finds conflicts among FSC board members' interests, is dissatisfied with this program's distinction between "plantation" and "natural" forest, and observes significant drift in licensing criteria since FSC established its label.
