Habitat in Intensive Management At a recent Southern Forest Assessment conference in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Ben Wigley of the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) presented a paper on "Contributions of Intensively Managed Forests to the Sustainability of Wildlife Communities in the South." Dr. Wigley and his nine co-authors report on several recent studies of breeding bird and reptile communities in industry-managed landscapes in South Carolina. The studies found that the intensively managed lands offered "opportunities to maintain forest cover, address concerns about fragmentation, and provide habitats for a variety of wildlife species. . . . In general, industry-managed forests can provide important habitats for many species and opportunities to consider landscape design, and therefore contribute to sustaining wildlife communities in the South."
