"Make A Cut On Us"

On December 2, FRA joined with the Forest Landowners Association in hosting a "Make A Cut On Us" event for key congressional aides and committee staff members, inviting them to a Christmas Tree farm in Maryland's Montgomery County and to cut a complimentary Christmas Tree-and to have a doughnut and some mulled cider, as well as to get acquainted. We sent 120 invitations and received 54 acceptances. Forty-seven actually made it out. FRA and FLA people met the staffers-mostly with key forestry, environmental, natural resource, or tax responsibilities-presented them with Christmas Tree vouchers, information packets, and refreshments. Nearly every one of them took time for at least a brief chat, some running to half an hour. While our focus was on establishing face-to-face rapport, we were surprised when many of them asked what issues were important to us and our members. We were ready. They learned our views on the pending "Hours of Service" regulations for truck drivers, OSHA's new Ergonomics standard, and the continued withdrawal of federal timberlands from management.
