FRA Writes to Lowe's and Home Depot

On December 26, FRA wrote to the Chief Executive Officers of Lowe's Companies and The Home Depot, the country's two leading home furnishing and building supply chains, in reference to their recent adoption of forest product procurement guidelines. The letters note our objection to each company's expressing a "preference" for The Forest Stewardship Council's approach to guaranteeing environmental integrity of wood supply and propose that such policies naively place millions of small non-industrial private landowners, who overall have brilliant records of environmental stewardship, at competitive disadvantages. The letter, expressing the position adopted at FRA's 2000 fall Board meeting, also offers FRA's support in developing procurement policies that effectively encourage sound environmental stewardship. Since the two companies' procurement policies, as stated in public documents, are substantially the same, FRA's letters to each CEO are essentially identical.
