Redwood Vandalized

Over Thanksgiving weekend, someone discovered that the giant redwood on Pacific Lumber's land in Humboldt County, California, which had provided a platform for the notorious Julia Hill's two-year tree sit, had been seriously maimed. According to the Associated Press, "a chain saw was used to cut about 32 inches around the tree and about one quarter of the way through the trunk." Whether this act of vandalism is, as claimed, a potentially fatal blow to the 15-foot diameter tree is not clear, although the Hill organization claims it has made the tree vulnerable to a windstorm. There has been talk of stabilizing it with guy-wires.

Hill's supporters are quick to infer that the vandal was someone from the timber industry with a grudge, although they cite no more evidence than that the chain saw work seemed adept to them. Perhaps the sheriff's investigation will provide an answer. Until then, we are inclined to interpret this act of vandalism more broadly-new, depressing evidence of the price of celebrity in today's United States.
