Banners Over Lowe's On October 8, treekeepers.org took a stand against Lowe's adoption of a product procurement policy which "discriminates against domestically produced wood and will cause higher lumber and wood product costs." The group's action was to fly a small airplane over Lowe's Motor Speedway during that day's NASCAR race towing a banner reading "LOWES / FSC NOT TOP CHOICE - WRONG CHOICE" and later another, reading "LOWES IMPORTS WOOD / EXPORTS JOBS." Treekeepers.org's literature is critical of Lowe's preferred certifier, the Forest Stewardship Council, predicting "FSC will become like the OPEC oil cartel. That organization will decide how much wood can be cut, when it can be cut, how it will be cut, and where it can be cut. . . . With FSC there is only one approach-theirs. This is not always best for wildlife, the environment, or the community." Treekeepers.org is a new organization formed by a group of independent mills and private landowners in the Appalachian region. Its primary purpose is to provide some counterbalance to the efforts of green organizations to extort procurement policies out of image-conscious retailers.
