ELF in Indiana On October 18, two different logging contractors working on southern Indiana's Martin State Forest discovered that some person or persons had cut fuel and hydraulic fuels lines on logging equipment at three sites, poured sand in gas tanks and crank cases, smashed gauges, slashed seat covers, and spray-painted the acronym "ELF" on some of the vehicles. A few days later, the Environmental News Service transmitted a release apparently originating with the Earth Liberation Front, claiming responsibility with ELF's characteristic phrases ("The price of doing dirty business in the state forests just went up.") The loggers hit in this action were Tim Moffat Logging of French Lick and Andis Logging of Paoli. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says that there have been five vandalism incidents purportedly originating with ELF in the area since January and notes a culture of radical preservationism at the nearby University of Indiana at Bloomington. Incidents include tree-spikings in Yellowwood and Morgan-Monroe state forests in June and extensive damage to logging and roadbuilding equipment at a local highway junction in April. Indiana DNR conservation officers, Indiana State Police, and the FBI are investigating. (See www.HoosierTimes.com for Steve Hinnefeld's October 19 article; use archive search term "ELF.")
