SAF "Wood" Exhibit

The Society of American Foresters, as part of its centennial celebration, is sponsoring a major exhibit at Washington, DC's National Building Museum entitled "Wood: An American Tradition," which will run through April 2001. The exhibit presents wood as America's dominant building material by exploring its availability, strength, and workability. To illustrate construction techniques, the exhibit features several wood structures at full scale, as well as models, photographs, drawings, and artifacts. The exhibit also considers wood's cultural significance.

"Our goal is to have visitors leave the exhibit understanding that wood, whether it's used for homebuilding, furniture, or wallpaper, comes not from a store but from the forest," says SAF executive vice-president Bill Banzhaf. "With Americans becoming increasingly disconnected from the land, we as a professional society thought it important to sponsor a major exhibition to let the public know that without foresters, the nation's forests could not sustainably supply the wood that people need for their homes, offices, and factories."
