Rating European Forests

Australia's National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) has pointed out an apparent discrepancy between the Worldwide Fund for Nature and the forest certifier associated with it, the Forest Stewardship Council. Following what it calls a "major survey" of the quality and management of forests in European countries, WWF ranked Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Austria, and Slovakia at the top of its list and Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and the United Kingdom at the bottom. However, notes NAFI, bottom-ranked UK has secured FSC recognition for its Woodland Assurance Scheme; whereas Finland, second from the top, has been denied FSC recognition for its Finnish Forest Certification System, "despite it being the preferred approach of 180,000 Finnish forest owners."
