FRA ELECTS BILL BAUGHMAN CHAIRMAN

On April 16, 2000, the Forest Resources Association Inc. elected as its Chairman Bill Baughman, Westvaco's Vice President and Forest Resources Director. Baughman will lead the 66-year-old trade association for the two-year period concluding in April 2002.

Addressing the FRA Board of Directors, Baughman affirmed the importance of maintaining and building FRA's programs in forestry activism and public education, by working with groups such as the Pulp and Paperworkers Resource Council, the Alliance for America, and the Temperate Forest Foundation, in view of a growing need for intensive forest management.

He also spoke of the importance of strengthening relationships among all sectors of the industry. "We are the only national organization where loggers, mill personnel, and suppliers sit down as equals at the same table. I want to rebuild and enhance that trust and relationship. We need to work harder to provide tangible examples that show FRA is an association that represents, equally, the views of wood suppliers and wood consumers."

Noting that "the forest products industry, in all senses, has truly become global," Baughman affirmed FRA's growing involvement with forestry issues that cross national borders and the need to reach out to counterpart organizations abroad. He also expressed his hope that FRA could, during his period as Chairman, increase service to forestland management interests-"those involved in planting, growing, and protecting repeated crops of trees"-in addition to the organization's traditional focus on harvest and wood supply.
