SFI(sm) "INCONSISTENT PRACTICES" REPORTING SYSTEM RUNNING

On December 16, the American Forest & Paper Association announced that the Interim Inconsistent Practices Reporting Protocol called for by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(sm) National Forum and its Loggers' Task Group is available and functioning. The intent is to provide loggers with a venue to report-in confidence-perceived violations of the SFI Standard by participants in the SFI program. Although several State Implementation Committees already have their own protocols for reporting inconsistent practices, the Interim Inconsistent Practices Report Protocol will remain in place until all states do.

Neil Sampson, Secretariat of the SFI Independent Expert Review Panel, will moderate complaints, providing a confidential "firewall" between the report filer and all others. On receipt of a complaint, Mr. Sampson will forward the allegation of inconsistency to the SFI participant company or designated representative, with an informational copy to the respective State Implementation Committee, requesting a written response within 30 days. Within 45 days of the filing of the original report, Mr. Sampson will provide a confidential and anonymous summation of the report and recorded outcome at meetings of the SFI Expert Review Panel, the SFI Executive Committee, and the SFI National Forum.

The report form is available at AF&PA's web site at www.afandpa.org (click the SFI "button" to find the form). To file an SFI Inconsistent Practices Report, mail, phone, e-mail, or fax the form to Mr. Neil Sampson, 5209 York Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22310; phone 703/924-0773; fax 703/924-0588; e-mail nsampson@compuserve.com.
