Westvaco/NC
Agreement On September 8,
Westvaco Corporation announced it had entered into a five-year
agreement with the Nature Conservancy, giving the conservation
organization the right to inspect the company’s entire 1.3 million
acres of U.S. timberland, to identify areas of unique biological or
other significance, and to work with Westvaco to design appropriate
treatment. The
agreement—which occurs in the context of a long history of
consultation and co-operation between Westvaco and the
Conservancy—seems posed to set a new standard in industry
accountability: in
effect, a new form of third-party audit. In the words of Westvaco’s Chairman and CEO John Luke, “We welcome new ideas on how to further improve on our excellent forest management record, and the Conservancy is an outstanding organization to work with. It is professional, it is practical, and it focuses its resources on the ground to achieve solid results.” Nature Conservancy, for its part, is hoping to form similar agreements with other industrial landowners.
