FRA Chairman Jim Brody congratulated Ken Eason, who accepted the Award on behalf of both, commenting, “Please accept this plaque and our thanks for a job very well done.” Eason thanked FRA and indicated his appreciation for the Wood Supply Research Institute, that funded the research the Technical Release documented. He added, “I’d like to thank my parents for their years of support when raising me, and I’d like to thank Dr. Greene, who can’t be with us tonight. He guided me in this project, and he is a wonderful teacher.” Eason and Greene’s Technical Release, Potential Impacts of 97,000-Pound GVW on Logging Costs, describes the cost advantages of raising the allowable Gross Vehicle Weights for trucks hauling raw forest products from the current limit in most states of 80,000 pounds to 97,000 pounds, with the addition of a sixth axle. Quantifying the impacts of several variables, the study demonstrated that this allowance could create cost reductions for hauling logs and other forms of wood fiber as high as 18%. The authors also made note that many competing industries overseas are already taking advantage of similar savings. W.J. Cox & Associates generously sponsors FRA’s National Technical Writing Award. Single copies of the winning publication are available at no charge from FRA at 301/838-9385. Requests should refer to stock number 06-R-18. The Forest Resources Association Inc. is a nonprofit trade association concerned with the safe, efficient, and sustainable harvest of forest products and their transport from woods to mill. FRA represents wood consumers, independent logging contractors, and wood dealers, as well as businesses providing products and services to the forest resource-based industries. ######
