Rockville, MD – Nearly 3,000 loggers, foresters, landowners, teachers, kids, and others curious about the future of forestry and logging met April 30 and May 1 in a managed forest near Hot Springs, Arkansas to view today’s and tomorrow’s harvesting and forest management systems in action.

“We had a great turn-out from loggers—-more than 1,200—-as well as 300 company foresters,” stated Richard Lewis, President of the Forest Resources Association, which hosted In-Woods Expo 2004 along with the Arkansas Timber Producers Association. “We asked exhibitors to show us their best and their latest, and we are extremely pleased about the solid attendance.”

Of the 79 exhibitors that displayed equipment and systems at In-Woods Expo 2004, 16 actually provided live demos of equipment at work in the woods: Bandit, Barko, BW&C Equipment, CSI, Deere, Franklin, JNS Equipment, Komatsu Forest, Timber Ax, Morbark, Peterson, Ponsse, Vines Equipment, Tigercat, Warrior of Arkansas, and Wilson Equipment. In addition, portable saw mill manufacturers Baker Products and Wood Mizer each demonstrated their systems, and Stihl staged its “Ironjack” show of traditional woodsmen’s skills.

“We’ve heard from exhibitors that they not only obtained strong leads for future customer contacts but that several actually closed some major sales right at the Expo,” stated Expo co-manager Larry Boccarossa, of the Arkansas Timber Producers Association. “This was a case of the right people meeting in the right setting.”

Although most visitors were from the South, the two-day event drew attendance from all over the United States, including the Pacific Coast, the Lake States, and New England, as well as guests from Brazil, New Zealand, Norway, and Canada.

In-Woods Expo 2004 was staged on a 150-acre section of International Paper’s “Kentucky Refuge” forest, just east of Hot Springs, Arkansas. IP generously donated the use of this mixed forest, which it manages for multiple values, including wildlife habitat, stream protection, and timber, under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®.

In-Woods Expo 2004, April 30-May 1, 2004 near Hot Springs, Arkansas, was a joint project of the Arkansas Timber Producers Association and the Forest Resources Association. Visit www.in-woods-expo.com.
