Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources
Association will host a week-long Tour of forest operations on the North
and South islands of New Zealand, October 8-17, 2004, to provide
foresters, loggers, and others with a detailed exposure to the practices,
technologies, and systems that have built the New Zealand industry.
“The New Zealand forest products industry has taken a ‘new’ raw material,
plantation-grown radiata pine, and developed the processes and products to
make their industry a true export-based global competitor,” stated Tour
leader John Manz. “We can learn from their experience.
Participants will get a first-hand look at the efficiency, productivity,
and cost components of this Pacific island nation’s resource management,
harvesting and transport systems, and market structure, with sidelights on
public policy and cultural factors that influence operations, as well as
on research programs that support all value elements.
Participation in the Tour group of 38 is open to everyone, although a
special reduced price is available to FRA members. The registration fee of
$3,850 ($4,350 for non-members) includes roundtrip airfare from Los
Angeles International Airport and lodging, internal transportation, and
fees and expenses associated with Tour stops, as well as all meals except
for one unscheduled dinner and lunch. Valid passports are required, but
special visas and inoculations are not. Participants sharing rooms may
each take $355 off the registration fee.
Spouse participation is welcome, and FRA can provide information about
options and costs for guided day- and half-day trips in the Nelson and
Rotorua areas.
The 38 spots on the Tour are available, first-come, first-served. FRA can
accept registrations, with deposits, as late as July 15. For a full
prospectus and registration form, contact FRA Director of Communications
