Rockville, MD – The National Timber Harvesting and Transportation
Safety (THATS) Foundation has published a 29-page booklet explaining
the basic provisions of federal transportation regulations, as they affect
the trucking of forest products.
The Transportation Regulations Booklet for the Forest Products Industry
presents information on today’s regulatory web in a simple
question-and-answer format. The Booklet provides compliance
information about hiring drivers, equipping the vehicle itself, hazardous
materials, employer responsibilities, hours-of-service rules, and truck
inspections. It is directed to trucking and logging contractors, drivers,
and mill transportation people.
“The log truck is the most visible part of the forest industry, and for
that reason it has drawn the special attention of federal regulators,”
stated the Forest Resources Association’s Director of Forestry
Programs, Steve Jarvis. “Fostering strict compliance with this body of
regulations is not only a matter of public safety but business survival.”
FRA’s Southwide Safety Committee, led by the North Carolina Forestry
Association’s Roger Pyle, developed the booklet with a grant from THATS.
Single copies of the Transportation Regulations Booklet for the Forest
Products Industry (05-A-3) are available to FRA members @ $20.00 per
copy, or $10.00 per copy for orders of 10 Booklets or more. Prices are
double for non-members. Please order from Forest Resources Association
Inc., 600 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 350, Rockville, Maryland 20852,
enclosing payment with order (checks payable to “FRA”); or phone in a
credit card order to 301/838-9385.
The Forest Resources Association Inc., which serves as the
secretariat of THATS, is a nonprofit trade association concerned with the
safe, efficient, and sustainable harvest of forest products and their
transport from woods to mill. FRA represents wood consumers, independent
logging contractors, and wood dealers, as well as businesses providing
products and services to the forest resource-based industries.
