CONRADIE AND GREENE HONORED FOR TECHNICAL
WRITING

The Forest Resources Association honored Ian Conradie and Dale
Greene of the University of Georgia at FRA’s March 7 Annual Awards
Dinner in New Orleans, Louisiana, for authoring the Association’s best
technical publication for the preceding year.
FRA Chairman Rick Frost congratulated Dale Greene, and presented him with
a plaque and a cash award, commenting, “these guys are smart, and they get
it.”
Ian Conradie, the graduate student who co-authored the prize-winning
Technical Release, has since accepted employment in Chile and was unable
to be present.
Conradie’s and Greene’s Technical Release, entitled Log Truck Weight
Policy Reaps Positive Results, describes the results of a
Rayonier company incentive program at its mills in Georgia to encourage
compliance with state weight laws by providing a disincentive for
suppliers to overload trucks. Under the new policy, a lower “overweight
cull” rate is applied to payloads exceeding the state legal limit plus 10%
tolerance.
University of Georgia researchers studied truck weight data before and
after implementation of Rayonier’s new truck weight policy. The percentage
of trucks arriving at Rayonier’s mills within 10% of Georgia’s 80,000
pound Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) limit increased markedly (75% before, 84%
after), and the number of significantly overweight (over 88,000 pounds)
loads dropped sharply (5.5% before, 3% after).
