Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources Association awarded its 2005 National Outstanding Forestry Activist Award to Tim Wigley, of PAC/West Communications, in Wilsonville, Oregon, for his leading role in building support for the President’s Healthy Forests Initiative with the public and policymakers.

FRA Chairman Rick Frost congratulated Tim at FRA’s 2005 Awards Dinner, March 7 in New Orleans, Louisiana, presenting him with a plaque and cash award, commenting, “on behalf of those who rely on the ability to harvest trees for a livelihood, we thank you for leading this campaign.”

Tim thanked Rick and noted, “I feel a bit awkward, because so many people worked behind the scenes, unseen, that really deserve it, and some of them are in this room. We have the high ground; we have the moral high ground. We should always seize it and never apologize for it.”

Tim Wigley has advocated forestry in political campaigns throughout the U.S., but his most valuable contribution was the development of Project Protect in 2003, a campaign to support the current Administration’s Healthy Forests Initiative and to turn it into effective national legislation.

Tim successfully secured funding for Project Protect, a coalition of resource-based communities and individuals urging Congress to reduce the threat of catastrophic fires in the West. He analyzed public perceptions about wildfire, forest health, and active forest management, turning these attitudes in effective pro-forestry messages. He then built relationships with allied forest products and grassroots groups to build support for a legislative solution to wildfire crisis management and built bipartisan support in Congress to introduce and pass the Healthy Forests Restoration Act.

As Representative Richard Pombo (R-California) puts it, “Tim’s efforts in leading the grassroots campaign, Project Protect, without question helped position the Healthy Forest Restoration Act for successful passage in the U.S. Congress. His efforts in public opinion research and utilizing that information to properly message and position the issue made a clear difference in this always contentious battle.”
