The Forest Resources Association has released a new safety training video, Coaching the Professional Logger, produced by the South Carolina Timber Producers Association and Alabama Loggers Council, with funding provided by FRA’s Timber Harvesting and Transportation Safety Foundation. This training video is designed for logging crew foremen, and individual operators, to improve performance by working under the leadership of the “coach,” the logging business owner.

Former Auburn University football coach Pat Dye introduces the basic training and coaching concepts that are important to building a winning football team and applies them to logging. Coach Dye stresses the importance of defining each crew member’s responsibility and the responsibility of the crew leader, as well as of putting together a “game plan” to improve the safety and performance of the logging operation.

The 25-minute video is divided into three segments to facilitate discussion in a group setting about three key concepts: the role of the player (crew member), the role of the coach (logging contractor), and formulating the game (harvest) plan.

Many “real life” hazardous logging situations are featured in the video, including entering/exiting the cab, operating near power lines, flagging the ends of tree-length loads, and controlling energy during equipment maintenance.

Although useful when viewed by individuals, the video is best used in a group setting in which participants can learn from each other to develop safer and more productive logging practices. Glen Delony, a logger from Ozark, Alabama who recently attended a Coaching the Professional Logger workshop, comments that “anybody who is willing to listen can learn something from these basic coaching concepts and situations that other loggers experienced.”

FRA members may order the video (including Discussion Leader’s Guide) for $25, domestic shipping included; the price is $50 for non-members. Please enclose payment with order, checks payable to “FRA”; charge orders may be phoned in to 301/838-9385.
