Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources Association honored Alex Singleton, of MeadWestvaco, at FRA’s March 28 Annual Awards Dinner in New Orleans, Louisiana, for authoring the Association’s best technical publication for the preceding year. Alex’s prize-winning publication, a Technical Release entitled Culvert Stabilization: Wooden Head Wall System, describes the use of a wooden wall retaining system to stabilize culverts over 36 inches in diameter.

FRA Chairman Allen Bedell congratulated Alex and presented him with a plaque and cash award. Alex responded, “I’d like to thank FRA for supporting this award, and I’d like to thank Ralph Perry for always thinking up new ideas, for always trying to raise the bar. We’re always writing up projects, to describe ideas. It’s truly an honor.”

The innovation Alex Singleton’s publication described is a wooden retaining wall system that MeadWestvaco District Supervisor Ralph Perry developed to prevent structure failures observed in large culverts in the past. Typically, sack concrete and surge rock have been used to stabilize culverts, but over time such means are insufficient to prevent culvert collapse, due to high water flows, road grading, and heavy truck traffic. The use of treated 2x8 boards and 4x4 posts provides strong, permanent support for large culverts.

Single copies of the winning publication are available at no charge from FRA at 301/838-9385. Requests should refer to stock number 02-R-28.
