Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources
Association awarded its 2004 National Forestry Activist Award to Debby
Blomberg, of Ogema, Wisconsin, for her leading role in supporting
grassroots pro-forestry activism in the Lake States and nationally.
FRA Chairman Allen Bedell congratulated Debby at FRA’s 2004 Awards Dinner,
March 28 in New Orleans, Louisiana, presenting her with a plaque and cash
award, commenting, “On behalf of all of us who rely on the right to
harvest trees, we thank you.”
Debby thanked Allen and indicated that the cash award was “going back to
our local Log A Load program.” In the presence of her husband, logger
Randy Blomberg, and her three daughters, Debby said, “I’m still trying to
figure out what I did to deserve this award.” Activism, she affirmed, “is
not a thing I have to do; it’s what I want to do.” She spoke of the
example set by her parents. “If you see a job to get done, you stand up
and roll up your sleeves. And I realized a long time ago that it’s
important for me to speak out for what I believe in.”
“Stand up, and tell your story.”
Debby Blomberg works with her husband, Randy, operating Blomberg Logging
and Trucking in Ogema, Wisconsin. When Randy brought home a brochure about
a new group called Lake States Women in Timber, Debby wrote to the
organization, saying that she was “a logger’s wife who wants to do more.”
She was soon serving on the organization’s Board of Directors and leading
a delegation of 30 Federated Women in Timber members to meet with
legislators in Washington. Debby has led the Lake States chapter for two
terms.
In September 1995, Debby was approached about starting a Log A Load For
Kids® campaign in the Lake States. She chaired the Lake States campaign
for its first two years.
Debby's ties to Log A Load are intensely personal. Her grandson, Luke, who
was born with a serious heart condition, was treated at a Children’s
Miracle Network hospital. Debby has first-hand knowledge of the importance
of supporting CMN hospitals through Log A Load fundraising. Today, Luke is
a healthy eight-year-old.
Debby recently completed her term as Chair of the National Log A Load For
Kids Advisory Group. She stays involved with Log A Load For Kids, Women in
Timber, and many other pro-forestry groups.
