CLEAR MESSAGES

  • Remember, the sights and sounds may be so different that they will easily become bewildering. Identify for your group what they should be concentrating on. Develop a simple handout.

  • A full stump-to-mill tour is great, as it shows the larger cycle of forest growth, harvesting, and end products. However, that type of tour will usually need more than an afternoon or morning. Describe the big picture, and then the portion of it they are seeing that day.

  • Don't assume the audience knows even the obvious-constantly ask if they understand. That does not mean "talking down" to a non-expert audience, which always gives offense, but looking for signals that your audience is comprehending and attending to what you are showing them, inviting questions, and offering clarification.
