LISTEN TO YOUR NEIGHBORS

We often think of communications as a one way street-getting our message out. While it certainly is important, and takes up the most of this section, it is not the whole picture. Listening to others' points of view is a key component of communication. Communications is a two-way street.

How can you go about listening, and knowing that you listen well?

  • Attend local groups' meetings, or read their newsletters, and learn what their positions are: why they believe as they do.

  • When in conversations, can you repeat back what others are saying? You don't have to agree with others, but have you listened well enough to repeat their thoughts? (By being able to do so, you may model the same respect for your position that you want from them.)
