COMMUNICATING WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS The future management of America's forests increasingly rests in the hands of Congress, the state legislatures, and a host of regulatory and administrative agencies. As citizens who rely on our nation's forests for our livelihoods, we must determine the role that each of us must play in shaping the laws and regulations for managing and harvesting forests in the future. During the past 20 years, individual citizens and grassroots groups have greatly increased their influence in the political decision-making process. The "no-use" advocates are effectively pressing their campaign to lock-up America's forests in the legislative arena as well as the regulatory and legal arenas. The nature of our competitive policy-making process demands that each of us play a political role in our community, and make sure our voice is being heard. The battle over the future management of America's forests will be won or lost by our willingness and ability to communicate our views to the policy-makers. And we cannot afford to lose.
