TIPS
FOR MAINTAINING A
CONSTITUENT RELATIONSHIP
-
Monitor
what the lawmaker is doing and the votes he or she casts on issues of
concern to the forestry community. Let the lawmaker know when you're
pleased or displeased with a vote or express opinions on an issue of
special concern to you.
-
Visit the
lawmaker's office and get to know the staff. Talk to key staff aides
who handle forestry-related issues.
-
Invite your
lawmaker to lunch, to speak at a meeting of a local business or civic
group, or to visit a company facility/job site. More about conducting
tours and special events below.
-
Send your
lawmaker appropriate news clippings and items that highlight your concerns
and interests in forestry-related issues.
-
Attend and
participate in your lawmaker's "town meetings" in the district.
-
Respond
to your lawmaker's questionnaires about forestry issues.
-
Get involved
personally in your lawmaker's election campaign, if he or she is
your candidate of choice. Attend political functions and fundraisers;
host a reception in your home with friends and colleagues in attendance.
-
Recommend
your lawmaker for Political Action Committee (PAC) support, if your
employer or organization sponsors a PAC.
When
your lawmakers or their staffs begin to ask advice from you on legislative
matters relating to forestry, you'll know you have succeeded in building
a productive constituent relationship.
