YOU COMMUNICATE . . . It's always best to contact any elected official by name. If you don't know the name of a local, state or federal representative, please consult your local telephone directory. You may also call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121. If you have Internet access, the American Forest & Paper Association website (www.afandpa.org) can help you find your state or federal elected officials.
To make contacts with your lawmakers meaningful, try to find out as much as you can about them including their personal political backgrounds, issue priorities, what committees they serve on, voting records, etc. For federal elected and appointed officials, you may want to order the 106th Congress Directory from the Forest Resources Association. Single copies are $10.00 each for FRA members, $20.00 for all others. Please call 301/838-9385 to order. The Library of Congress's THOMAS site is a superb reference tool for legislative information. Use this page to search for past and present legislation by bill number, topic or title. This site is also provides a convenient way to access the Congressional Record, which is a transcript of each day's proceedings on the floors of the House and the Senate. Once you've done your homework, there are several ways to communicate with elected officials:
