TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH REGULATORS

Many of the same rules that apply to communicating with elected officials also apply to your communications with regulators. Both are public officials that work for YOU! Here are a few tips on making your communications with regulators count:

  • Web sites are posted for virtually all federal agencies and most state agencies. Use the automatic e-mail message function to send comments and questions to regulatory agency personnel.

  • Search engines on the Internet often have a list of subtopics that you can use to expedite your search for government web pages. Click on the "government," "politics," or "Washington, DC" buttons that will take you directly to the site you need to contact public officials.

  • Coalitions are particularly useful in letting regulators know that many people are affected by their rules. You may also want to "Search the Web" for other lobbying or activist groups that share your point of view, i.e., a search using the keyword "ergonomics" turned up:

www.ncergo.org - the National Coalition on Ergonomics-a group of organizations responding to OSHA's proposed ergonomics regulations.

    www.wi4wda.org/blueribbon/roadless.htm - a coalition opposing the President's "roadless initiative."

  • Send copies of letters and other communications you have with regulators and send them to your elected officials. Your lawmakers may be able to intervene with regulators on your behalf.
