SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN MULTIPLE-USE COUNCIL

MISSION: The mission of the Southern Appalachian Multiple Use-Council is to promote the balanced integration and protection of forestland values (water, fish & wildlife, timber, recreation, wilderness, grazing) across the forest landscape in the Southern Appalachians.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To promote the principle of multiple-use as defined by the Multiple use and Sustained Yield Act of 1960.

  • To promote the education of the general public regarding the benefits and costs of multiple use management of our forests.

  • To promote and improve the public's understanding and appreciation of the forest products industry in all its forms.

  • To promote the expansion and development of the renewable forest resource base to assure adequate forest crops to meet the needs for this and future generations.

  • To promote forestry standards of operation which will enhance the above objectives.

  • To work in conjunction with all entities involved in land use planning to affect the above objectives.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Publishes action alerts.

  • Organizes grassroots activities.

  • Conducts an active op/ed writing campaign.

  • Conducts educational work with media reporters and editorial staffs.

  • Co-sponsors annual seminar for congressional staff and state legislators.

  • Sponsors annual awards recognizing individuals and organizations for exemplary natural resource stewardship.

  • Helps organize other grassroots organizations.
